What Happens When You Hit Send

Large language models like ChatGPT and Claude are prediction engines. They’ve mapped how words relate across huge amounts of text, and every answer is the most likely next set of words for what you typed.

Your words become tokensYour prompt is turned into numbers the model can work with.
It finds similar patternsIt looks for contexts in its training that match yours.
It weighs the oddsIt calculates which words most likely come next.
It writes the likeliest answerVague in, average out. Specific in, expert out.

That’s why a vague prompt gets an average answer, and a specific, expert-framed prompt gets a far better one.

Same Question, Better Prompt

Vague prompt“What does Paul mean by justification?”

You get a surface-level, averaged explanation.
RAFT prompt“You are a New Testament scholar who specializes in Paul. Compare Romans 3:28 with Galatians 2:16, explain the key Greek terms, and show what each passage means for everyday faith. Use clear headings and plain language.”

The second prompt points the model toward scholarly sources and patterns instead of beginner material. Think of a prompt as coordinates: the more precise they are, the closer you land.

Vague prompt“Explain gravity.”

You get a middle-school answer.
Expert framing“You are a physics professor explaining general relativity to graduate students. Show how spacetime curvature produces gravity, with the key equations.”

Discernment Still Comes First

  • A better prompt gives a better answer, not a true one. Check every answer against Scripture and reliable sources.
  • Don’t put private details about yourself or others into a prompt.
  • Use AI to serve people and save time for what matters, not to replace prayer, study, or your church family.
