A Christian’s first steps

Getting Started with AI, Faithfully

Feeling unsure about AI? That’s normal, and it’s wise. These five short steps help you start with confidence, grounded in Scripture.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

1

Understand What AI Actually Is

AI isn’t a thinking robot or a conscious being. It’s more like a very advanced calculator that works with words instead of numbers. You still decide what to ask and whether the answer makes sense.

A tool, not a threat to God
  • David used a sling. Bezalel used a craftsman’s tools. AI is another tool we can use faithfully.

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV)

2

Start with Prayer and a Biblical Foundation

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5 (KJV)

Three principles for using AI
  • Stewardship: “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV)
  • Truth: “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour.” Ephesians 4:25 (KJV). Be honest about AI help and check facts.
  • Service: “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another.” 1 Peter 4:10 (KJV)
A prayer before you begin“Lord, give me wisdom to use this technology in ways that honor You and serve others. Help me be discerning and faithful with these new tools.”
3

Choose Your First AI Tool Wisely

Start with established tools that have clear policies. Take your time choosing.

“The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.” Proverbs 21:5 (KJV)

ChatGPTThe most popular, easy to use. Good for questions, writing help, and learning how AI works.
ClaudeThoughtful, careful answers. Great for longer conversations.
GrammarlyAI writing help that feels less intimidating. A gentle first step.
Your first week
Days 1 to 2Create an account with one tool.
Days 3 to 4Ask about topics you know well and see how it answers.
Days 5 to 7Try a small task: a thank-you note or a grocery list.
Gentle reminderDon’t share personal, financial, or private details about others while you learn. Treat it like a helpful stranger: friendly, but careful.

4

Communicate Clearly and Verify Everything

AI answers based on the context you give it. Clear prompts get better answers, but no answer is the final authority.

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV)

Your two-step approach
  • Ask well: learn a simple prompting method like RAFT in Christian AI Prompts.
  • Check well: test important answers against Scripture, reliable sources, and mature Christian counsel.
5

Start with Small, Faithful Projects

Begin with low-stakes tasks that serve others. Faithfulness in small things prepares us for more (Luke 16:10).

MinistryDraft a church newsletter, write Bible study questions, or organize volunteer schedules.
Personal growthMake prayer journal prompts, plan a Scripture reading schedule, or outline a study.
Serving othersWrite thank-you notes, plan meals for a family in need, or make lessons for children’s ministry.
The 10-minute testPick one task that usually takes you 30 minutes and see if AI helps you finish it faithfully in less. Spend the saved time on prayer, family, or serving someone.

You’re ready

Take Your First Steps

Every expert was once a beginner. Start small, stay in the Word, and use AI to love God and serve others better.

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Colossians 3:17 (KJV)
