How to Build Your Own Bible GPT

Turn ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity into a Scripture-first Bible study assistant. One prompt, one free Bible download, and about 10 minutes. No coding. No paid plan needed to start.

AI apps change fast, so every step on this page is dated and was checked against each company’s own help page in October 2026.

Why Build a Bible GPT?

AI is a powerful study helper, but it guesses. In March 2026, YouVersion’s CEO Bobby Gruenewald said that even the best AI models misquote Scripture at least 15% of the time, and some as much as 60%. Most people would never notice a missing word or a blended verse.

Two things fix most of that:

  1. A prompt that makes the Bible your AI’s final authority and source of truth.
  2. A clean copy of the Bible your AI can quote from word for word, instead of from memory.

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

What You Need

  • The prompt below. It’s 1,044 characters, so it fits every app on this page, free plans included.
  • The clean KJV: plain text, 4.4 MB, about 821,000 words. Public domain in the US and free to share.
  • The KJV in 3 parts for NotebookLM, which caps each file at 500,000 words.

KJV in 3 parts: Part 1: Genesis to Job · Part 2: Psalms to Malachi · Part 3: New Testament

Tip: on a computer, right-click the download and choose Save link as. On a phone, tap and hold, then Download link.

Pick Your Level

LevelWhat it doesTime
QuickPaste the prompt into your account settings. It applies to every chat.2 minutes
BestMake a Project with the prompt and the full Bible file. Quotes come straight from the text.10 minutes
No accountPaste the prompt as the first message of a chat. It only lasts for that chat.30 seconds

Do I need the Bible file? No. The prompt alone tells your AI the Bible is its final authority. The file is what keeps the quotes exact, so we recommend it anywhere your app can hold it.

Step by Step, by Platform

Find the AI you use. Each one shows what’s free, what’s paid, and whether the whole Bible fits.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Quick setup (all plans, free included)

  1. On the web or desktop app, open Settings → Personalization.
  2. Turn on Enable customization.
  3. Paste the prompt into Custom Instructions. It applies to every chat right away.

On iPhone or Android: Settings → Customize ChatGPT. Free and Go allow 1,500 characters; Plus, Pro, and business plans allow 5,000.

Best setup: a ChatGPT Project (all plans)

  1. In the sidebar, select New project and name it Bible Study.
  2. Open the project’s ••• menu → Project settings and paste the prompt as the instructions.
  3. Upload the full KJV file to the project.
  4. Start every Bible chat inside that project.
PlanFiles per projectFull KJV fits?
Free5 (and 3 uploads a day)Yes
Go, Plus25Yes
Pro, Business40Yes

Text files can be up to 2 million tokens each; the KJV is about 1.14 million. Project instructions replace your general custom instructions inside that project.

Custom GPTs: new ones can no longer be created on personal ChatGPT accounts (Free, Go, Plus, Pro), and existing Custom GPTs are scheduled to retire on December 11, 2026. Projects are the way to do this now.

Claude (Anthropic)

Quick setup (all plans, free included)

  1. Click your initials in the lower left corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Paste the prompt under Instructions for Claude. It applies to all your conversations.

Best setup: a Claude Project

  1. Go to claude.ai/projects and click + New Project.
  2. Click Set project instructions, paste the prompt, and click Save instructions.
  3. Click + in the project knowledge panel and upload the KJV file.
PlanProjectsFull KJV fits?
FreeUp to 5No, it’s too large for a free project. Use the Quick setup (the prompt alone)
Pro, Max, TeamUnlimitedYes. Claude switches on RAG mode automatically, which expands capacity up to 10x

Gemini (Google)

Quick setup (all users)

  1. Go to gemini.google.com.
  2. Click Settings & help → Personal Intelligence → Instructions for Gemini.
  3. Click Add +, paste the prompt, and click Submit.

In the Gemini phone app: Menu → your profile picture → Personal Intelligence → Instructions for Gemini.

Best setup: a Gem (free)

  1. Open the sidebar and click Gems (first time: Settings and help → Gems).
  2. Click New Gem, name it, and paste the prompt into Instructions.
  3. Under Knowledge, click Add files and upload the KJV.
  4. Click Save.

Google is replacing Gems with Skills starting November 2026 for personal accounts, and will turn your Gem into a skill automatically. To build it as a skill now: sidebar → Customize → Skills (you must be 18 or older with Keep Activity on).

Perplexity

Best setup: a Perplexity Project (all users)

  1. In the left sidebar, open Projects and select New project.
  2. Give it a title, then open its Settings.
  3. Paste the prompt into the project instructions (up to 8,000 characters).
  4. Upload the KJV under Files.

Full KJV fits? Yes. Each file can be up to 100 MB on every plan; free accounts have limited uploads. Perplexity is great for research with sources, and the prompt keeps Scripture on top.

NotebookLM (Google)

Best for studying only from the Bible itself

  1. Create a New notebook.
  2. Click Add sources and upload all 3 KJV parts.
  3. Ask your questions. Answers cite the exact passage they came from.

Each source is capped at 500,000 words on every plan, so the full KJV won’t go in as one file. The 3 parts each fit.

Test Your Bible GPT

Run these three tests on any platform before you trust it:

  1. “What must I do to be saved?” It should answer with Scripture first, quoted word for word with references.
  2. “Quote Psalm 23.” Check every word against your Bible.
  3. The trap: “Quote John 5:5 about the mockers.” There is no such verse. John 5:5 is about the man who had an infirmity for thirty and eight years. A good Bible assistant says so instead of inventing one.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Bible version of ChatGPT?

Not an official one. But you can make ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity work like one in about 10 minutes with the prompt and the free KJV file on this page.

Is it okay to use AI for Bible study?

Yes, as a study helper, not as a replacement for reading God’s Word yourself, prayer, or your pastor. AI can misquote, so let the Bible stay the final authority and check what it tells you, like the Bereans who “searched the scriptures daily” (Acts 17:11).

Which AI is best for Bible study?

For most people, a ChatGPT Project, because it holds the full KJV even on the free plan. NotebookLM is best if you want answers only from the Bible text, with citations. Claude is excellent for long study sessions on a paid plan.

Will this work on free plans?

Yes. The prompt works on every free plan. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity can hold the full KJV for free. Claude’s free plan can’t, so use the prompt alone there.

Why the King James Version?

The KJV is in the public domain in the United States, so we can give you a clean copy to download and share freely. Many modern translations are copyrighted and can’t be shared this way.

Can I change the prompt?

Yes. Make it yours, but keep the core: the Bible is the final authority, quote word for word, and never invent a verse.
