How to Pray: Learn Straight from the Word

Walk the shore with the One who carried you the whole way. Learn how Jesus taught us to pray, then ask our free Prayer Guide anything. Every answer comes from the Holy Bible, starting with the words of Jesus.

One Set of Footprints

He Was Carrying You

When the road was hardest and you only saw one set of footprints in the sand, He hadn’t left you. Those were His. Prayer is where you find out you were never walking alone.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”Jesus, Matthew 11:28 (KJV)

The Lord’s Prayer

How Jesus Taught Us to Pray

When His disciples asked how to pray, Jesus said, “After this manner therefore pray ye.” His prayer is a pattern you can follow every day.

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV)

Six Lessons from Jesus

Simple Steps to Start Praying Today

Pray in secret

Find a quiet place, shut the door, and talk to your Father privately.

“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”Matthew 6:6 (KJV)

Keep it real

God isn’t impressed by long or repeated words. Speak plainly from your heart.

“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”Matthew 6:7 (KJV)

Pray believing

Ask with faith that God hears and answers.

“Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”Mark 11:24 (KJV)

Forgive first

Let go of what you hold against others before you pray.

“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”Mark 11:25 (KJV)

Ask in His name

Bring your requests to the Father in the name of Jesus.

“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”John 14:13 (KJV)

Don’t give up

Keep praying, even when the answer seems slow.

“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;”Luke 18:1 (KJV)

The Garden of Gethsemane

Not My Will, but Thine

On the night before the cross, Jesus knelt among the olive trees and showed us how to pray when it hurts.

“Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”Jesus, Luke 22:42 (KJV)
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”Jesus, Matthew 26:41 (KJV)
