Meta AI Image Generation, AI Safety Grades & Qwen AI Tool | AI for Christians

AI FOR CHRISTIANS PRESENTS

Thursday Morning Coffee with AFC

GET YOUR KINGDOM JOLT

July 17, 2026

Good morning. Pour your cup and settle in. This week carries some of the most important AI news believers need to be paying attention to — and one free tool that changes what is possible for anyone doing Kingdom work right now. Let's get into it.

Meta Built a Tool to Generate AI Images of You — Without Asking

Meta launched a feature called Muse Image on Instagram that could generate AI images of real people directly from their public profiles. No consent required. No opt-in. Just a name or a photo, and the platform could conjure a synthetic version of you. The backlash was swift — talent unions, privacy advocates, and everyday users pushed back hard — and Meta suspended the feature within days. The technology still exists. The suspension is temporary. The underlying question has not been answered.

What Meta's engineers built and then quietly suspended under pressure cuts straight to a question the Kingdom cannot afford to ignore: What does it mean to bear the image of God in a world where your likeness can be generated, redistributed, and used without your knowledge?

OUR TAKE

Genesis 1:27 says you are made in the image of God — not in the image of a dataset. The ability to generate a synthetic version of any person without consent is not a feature glitch. It is a theological problem. This week's suspension does not close the conversation. It opens it. The Church needs a voice here, and believers need the discernment to understand what is actually at stake. You being made in His image means something. That something needs to be defended.

The Best AI Safety Grade Any Lab Earned This Year Was a C+. This Week, OpenAI's Head of Safety Resigned.

The Future of Life Institute released its 2026 AI Safety Index, grading every major AI lab on safety and governance. Anthropic earned a C+ — the highest score any frontier lab received. OpenAI and Google scored lower. These are not startups operating in a garage. They are the companies whose systems run inside your phone, your school, your hospital, and your workplace. The same week the safety index dropped, OpenAI's head of safety, Johannes Heidecke, announced his departure — the latest in a steady pattern of safety leadership exiting as the company accelerates its product roadmap.

A C+ is the best anyone got. These are the systems the world is already running on.

OUR TAKE

A C+ is above average — and it is the crown jewel of this entire industry right now. The honest question is not whether these labs are trying. It is whether above average is enough for systems embedded in every corner of daily life. This is exactly why every church needs a clear AI policy before AI chooses the policy for them.Take the Church AI Policy Assessment here.

People Are Starting to Prefer Talking to AI Over Talking to People — The Church Has Something AI Never Will

A growing body of research and behavioral data is pointing toward the same trend: people increasingly prefer to process their feelings, seek advice, and talk through emotional struggles with AI rather than with family members, friends, or pastors. The reasons are consistent — no judgment, always available, never tired, never distracted, never going to repeat what you said. Mental health organizations are already noting that many people feel more comfortable disclosing their deepest struggles to an AI than to another human being. Among younger generations, this behavior is becoming default rather than exception.

This is not a fringe behavior. It is mainstream and accelerating. And it raises a pastoral question that every local church needs to sit with: if people feel safer talking to AI than to their community, what does that say about the kind of community we have been building?

OUR TAKE

AI can listen. It can reflect your words back to you and help you organize your thoughts. But it cannot weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15). It cannot carry your burdens (Galatians 6:2). It cannot be the hands and feet of Jesus in your hardest moment. The Church does not need to compete with AI on availability or patience. It needs to offer what AI is constitutionally incapable of providing: genuine human presence, Spirit-led counsel, and love that only comes through covenant community. This trend is not a threat to ministry. It is an invitation to do it better.

AFC Tool of the Week

Qwen — The Most Complete Free AI Tool Available Right Now

Most people have heard of ChatGPT or Claude. Fewer have heard of Qwen — and that is exactly why we are covering it this week. Qwen is Alibaba's AI, available completely free atchat.qwen.ai, and it may be the most capable all-around free AI tool that exists right now. Here is what it actually does — not in theory, but today, for free, on any device you have.

It Talks With You Like a Real Conversation

Qwen is not a question-and-answer machine. You can have a long, extended conversation with it — it remembers what you said earlier in the thread, builds on it, and follows your train of thought. For ministry work, that means you can think out loud with it. You can start with a rough idea, push back, refine it, go deeper, and end up somewhere you would not have reached alone. That is the kind of collaboration most people only get in a paid tool.

It Does Deep Research

Ask Qwen to research a topic and it does not just summarize what it already knows — it can pull current information, organize it, and present it in a way that actually helps you think. For a ministry leader trying to understand AI's impact on faith, or a believer trying to research a theological question, or a Christian business owner trying to understand a market — Qwen can do the research work that used to require hours of your time.

It Generates Images

Need a graphic for a social post? A visual for a lesson or presentation? Qwen generates images from your text description — right inside the same tool you are already using for conversation. You do not need a separate account, a separate subscription, or a separate platform. Describe what you want and it builds it.

It Makes Videos

Qwen can also generate short videos — from a text prompt. Think about what that means for a small church, a solo ministry, or a Christian creator with no video production budget. You describe a scene, a concept, a message, and Qwen builds a video from it. The quality is competitive with tools that cost hundreds of dollars a month.

It Analyzes Video

Hand Qwen a video and ask it questions about what is in it. It can watch the video, understand the content, and tell you what it sees. For ministry leaders reviewing recorded messages, for educators evaluating training content, for anyone trying to pull insights out of video footage without watching hours of material — this alone is worth knowing about.

It Works in More Than 100 Languages

Qwen was built for the world, not just English speakers. If your church serves a multilingual congregation, or you support missionaries in the field, or you want to create content for believers in other languages — Qwen handles it natively. Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Swahili, Portuguese, French, and dozens more. You do not need a translation plugin or a separate workflow. It is already built in.

All of This, Free, Right Now

Chat. Research. Images. Video. Video analysis. Long conversations. More than 100 languages. All of it. Free. Available on any device with a browser. No download required. No credit card. Go to chat.qwen.ai and you are in. For Kingdom workers who feel like they cannot afford the tools everyone else is using — Qwen is the answer to that feeling right now.

3 STEPS TO GET STARTED

  1. Go to chat.qwen.ai right now and start a conversation.Do not just ask it one question and close the tab. Stay in the thread. Push back. Ask follow-up questions. Let it show you what a real AI conversation feels like.

  2. Ask it to research something you have been meaning to dig into.Give it a topic — AI in the church, a theological question, a business problem — and let it go deep. See what it brings back and how useful it actually is for your work.

  3. Test one creative capability this week — image or video.Describe a visual you need for ministry, for a post, for a lesson — and see what Qwen builds. You may never need a separate design tool again.

SECTION 3

Scripture + AI Insight

"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." — Genesis 1:27

Everything in AI that touches the human image — generating it, replacing it, approximating it, selling access to it — runs straight into this verse. The imago Dei is not a theological abstraction. It is the ground on which every AI ethics conversation has to stand. Meta building Muse Image is not just a privacy story. It is a story about what happens when the tools we build forget what a person actually is. As believers, we carry the answer to the question these tools keep raising. Now is the time to know how to say it.
