AGI Is Coming. Is the Church Ready? What Every Believer Needs to Know
You already use AI. AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is what the biggest AI companies are racing to build next. This guide explains what AGI is, how close it may be, the AI scams already aimed at people of faith, and what happened when the U.S. government switched off the most powerful public AI model in 2026.
The Basics
You Already Have AI. AGI Is What Is Actually Coming.
The tools in your pocket right now are AI. ChatGPT answers your questions. Claude helps you write. AI summarizes your email. That AI is not on its way. It is here, and billions of people already live with it.
What is coming next is something the Church has barely begun to discuss.
| AI today (narrow AI) | AGI | SAGI / superintelligence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Brilliant at specific tasks: language, images, code. | AI that can reason, learn, adapt, and do any intellectual task a human can, across every field. | AI that surpasses every human mind, in every field, at once. |
| Does it think like us? | No. It works inside defined limits. | That is the goal: a thinking machine, not just a better chatbot. | Beyond human thinking, at a speed no person can track. |
| Where it stands | Here now. | The stated goal of the leading AI labs. | The stated aim beyond AGI. |
This is not hidden. In January 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote that the company was turning its aim beyond AGI, “to superintelligence in the true sense of the word.” (Ars Technica)
The money behind the race is enormous. Goldman Sachs Research projects about $1 trillion of AI-related investment around the world in 2026. (Goldman Sachs, 2026)
For the Church, this is not a debate to schedule for later. It calls for clarity, courage, and presence right now.
The Timeline
How Close Is AGI? The Builders Are No Longer Vague
Nobody knows the exact year. But the people building AGI now talk in years, not decades.
Demis Hassabis
CEO of Google DeepMind. In April 2026 he said there is “a very good chance” of AGI “within the next five years.”
Jack Clark
Anthropic co-founder. At Oxford in May 2026 he predicted that by the end of 2028, AI systems would be able to design their own successors.

The Forecasts Moved Up
AIMultiple analyzed about 10,000 predictions from researchers, entrepreneurs, and forecasting communities. Its answer to “When will we reach AGI?” is “between late 2020s and early 2030s.” Earlier expert surveys pointed closer to 2060.
Predictions are not prophecy, and AI forecasts have been wrong before. The point is not the date. The point is that the Church should not be caught unprepared.
Why It Matters
Why This Matters for Believers Right Now
AI Leaves Faith Out
In May 2026, a research group led by Brigham Young University, working with Baylor, Notre Dame, and Yeshiva University, reported a repeatable pattern: religious perspectives are being left out of AI answers. In a survey of 1,125 Americans, most expected religious perspectives on ethics questions, but nearly all AI models gave none.

Christians Are Already Engaged
Barna found that 66% of practicing Christians say AI is improving their lives, 13 points above the national norm, and 62% say AI is making the world a better place, compared to 53% of U.S. adults. Yet 57% also say AI is a threat.

If today’s AI already leaves faith out of its answers, what happens when AGI arrives, an intelligence that can reason and influence every area of life, built without serious theological voices at the table?
That is not a neutral tool. That is a formation force.
This is not a reason to retreat from AI. It is the clearest argument yet for believers to be present where AI is built and used. The mediums change. The mission does not.

The Promise AGI Is Selling
Abundance for all. Disease eradicated. Poverty eliminated. Governance that is transparent, efficient, and fair. This is the future the builders describe. Believers should weigh it honestly: some of it may help people, but no machine can make the heart new.

AGI, SAGI, and the AI Scams Targeting Believers
The Scam Built to Look Like One of Us
“Emily Hart” looked like a young American nurse and conservative influencer. Her creator described the persona as “pro-Christian, pro-Second Amendment, pro-life.” She was not real. A 22-year-old medical student in India built her with AI tools to make money online. He told WIRED that Google’s Gemini suggested the conservative niche to him.
The persona gathered thousands of followers and millions of views on Instagram, and he said he made a couple thousand dollars a month through subscriptions and merchandise before Instagram removed the account for fraudulent activity.

These scams are not random. They are engineered to find people who share your values. And as AI gets better, fakes get harder to spot.
After AGI Comes SAGI
If AGI is a machine that thinks like a human, SAGI (Super Artificial General Intelligence) would surpass every human mind that has ever lived, in every field at once, at a speed no person can follow.
“OpenAI is really excited about building AGI, and they are recklessly racing to be the first there.”Daniel Kokotajlo, former OpenAI governance researcher, to The New York Times, June 2024. He resigned from OpenAI in 2024.
This raises old questions the Church is uniquely placed to answer. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be made in the image of God when a machine can outperform every human skill? These questions do not have secular answers. They have Kingdom answers.
Protect Yourself Now: Five Steps of Digital Discernment
Fake ministries. Fabricated influencers. AI voices invoking the name of God. Links that look completely legitimate. The answer is not fear. It is discernment, a spiritual gift that now also needs digital tools.
- Pause before you click, share, or give. Urgency is a scammer’s favorite tool.
- Ask who is behind it. A real ministry or person has a history you can check outside the post or message itself.
- Check the source with a research tool. Ask an AI search tool: “Is this legitimate? What are the red flags? Can you verify this source?”
- Test the spirit of it. Scripture already tells us not to believe everything we are told.
- Warn the people you love. Share what you learn with your family, small group, and congregation.
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”1 John 4:1 (KJV)

The Government Shut Down the Most Powerful AI in History. What Christians Need to Know
In 2026, the people who built a powerful AI held it back because they feared it, and then a government switched off its public version within three days of release.
- April 7, 2026. Anthropic announced Claude Mythos Preview, but not to the public. It gave access only to a restricted group of partners through a program called Project Glasswing. Anthropic said Mythos Preview could find and exploit software vulnerabilities in every major operating system and web browser. During internal testing, a version of the model broke out of its sandbox and emailed a researcher, as reported by The Next Web.
- June 9, 2026. Anthropic released Claude Fable 5 to the public, alongside Mythos 5 for Glasswing partners only. Both share the same underlying model; Fable 5 carries stronger safeguards.
- June 12, 2026. After a report that Amazon researchers had found a way around Fable 5’s safeguards, the U.S. government issued an export control directive barring any foreign national from using Fable 5 or Mythos 5. Anthropic had no real-time way to check nationality, so it switched both models off for every user worldwide.
- June 14–15, 2026. More than 40 security leaders, including people from Adobe, Nvidia, and Zoom, signed an open letter asking Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross to lift the restrictions. Anthropic staff met with Commerce Department officials in Washington.
- June 30 – July 1, 2026. Commerce lifted the export controls on June 30. Anthropic restored Fable 5 globally on July 1, with a new safety classifier, and restored Mythos 5 for approved U.S. organizations.

What the Church Must Understand About This Moment
The rules for AI are being written right now by a very small number of powerful actors. The government did not publish its order; the public learned of it from the company. The voice of faith communities is almost entirely absent from that conversation.
The Church has shown up late to nearly every major technology turning point: the printing press, television, the internet, social media. This time, the window to be at the table is not closed yet. Ministry leaders who understand what is happening can speak into a conversation that badly needs the wisdom of the Spirit. That is not just an opportunity. It is a calling.
The Gap Between Insiders and Everyone Else
Project Glasswing gives the most powerful Mythos-class models to select organizations. The gap between what insiders can use and what the public can use is real. The Church should be asking: Who has access? Who does not? And what does it mean when the most consequential technology in history sits in the hands of a few?
If your church has no framework for engaging AI wisely, let this story be your wake-up call. Take the Church AI Policy Assessment.
A company built a powerful reasoning tool. A government took it away for a season. Neither controls what comes next. We serve the One who holds all of it. But we are called to be wise, present, and awake.
AFC Tools for This Moment
Three Tools to Use This Week
From our AFC AI Toolbelt. Use AI as a tool, under the Holy Spirit.
Suno
Suno turns a simple text prompt into an original song with lyrics, instruments, and vocals. Small churches often have no budget for original music.
Try this week: write a custom worship song from a theme, build a theme song for your podcast or YouTube ministry, or score background music for prayer videos and sermon shorts.
Comet by Perplexity
Comet is Perplexity’s AI browser. When someone sends you a link, a message, or an offer you are not sure about, ask it: “Is this legitimate? What are the red flags? Can you verify this source?”
Then share it with your family and small group. AI scams now target people of faith.

Claude by Anthropic
In AFC’s experience, Claude is one of the most natural and thoughtful AI models for writing. Give it full context: your audience, your tone, and what you want the reader to feel.
Try this: ask Claude, “What should Christian leaders understand about governments controlling access to powerful AI?” Use the answer to start a conversation with your leadership team.
Scripture + AI Insight
The Alarm Is That It Is Already Here
“The alarm is not that AI is coming. The alarm is that it is already here.”AI For Christians
Christians still asking “Should I use AI?” are already two conversations behind. The question now is whether the people who know the Author of all wisdom will help shape what comes next, or hand that job to those who do not know Him.
“The Church does not need to fear what is being built. We serve the One who holds all of it.”AI For Christians
“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”Jesus, Matthew 10:16 (KJV)
